SERIOUS CHARGES AGAINST A YOUTH.

. c • SENTENCED TO TWELVE MONTHS' IMPRISONMENT. Oscar Garrick, a youth about 18 years J of age, appeared on renwnd before Dr. A. M'Arthur, S.M., this morning for seutenco on a. charge of having indecently exposed himself in Mount-street on or about the 22nd November. His Worship said that if what Mr. Wilford had said on Friday, that accused Was a pervert, was correct, something ■would have to be done concerning him. On the other hand, if his conduct was unaccountable, he ought to be severely punished, because we had our parks, ■nhich were frequented by women and children who had to be protected. If these places of recreation were to be haunted by people like the accused, then instead of being a pleasure they would be a menace to society. So far as his Worship was concerned he had to deal with what accused had done. There had been so many cases of this kind lately that those who came before him must be dealt with in such a manner as to act as a warning to others. Accused would" be sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment for indecency. Immediately after passing sentence his Worship said he would write to the Minister of Education and draw his attention to what might be done in accused's interests. If there was any hope of thinking anything could be done, his Worship thought it would be. Mr. Wilford asked if his Worship referred to the suggestion of the police of sentencing accused to a term of imprisonment with a recommendation to have him transferred to an industrial school. His Worship replied, ''That is so." He then recorded 'a sentence of one month's imprisonment on each of two other charges of common assault in the Botanicai Gardens and near the Terrace School respectively. Ternrs of imprisonment cm all three charges to be concurrent.
