WEST COAST STEAMSHIP COMPANY. The Greymouth Star states that the West Coast Steamship Company — a new compaDj — was to be registered last week with ,1 naminal capital of £25,000. Tho company is formed for the purpose of cairying 011 general shipping business, and as a primary step they have purchased the s.s. Toigauten, which will be employed in thp Hokitika-Greymonth-West-port timber and coal trade. The vessel is now due iv Sydney, and Captain M'Artliur, until recently captain of the Union Cora- I pany's steamer Mapourika, who is a large shareholder in the company, left Wellington for Sydney on Saturday for the purpose of taking charge of the vessel, and bringing her to < New Zealand. He was aocompanied by Mr. Murray, engineer of the Oreti, another j shareholder. Mr. Murray is also resigning his post, and is taking up the position of engineer on the Torgauten. Agents have been appointed at various places, and. an agency will be started in Wellington and also at LytteUon and Dunedin. It is understood that the price paid for the Torgauten was £6000. She has a carrying capacity of 400 tons dead weight on a 10ft draught,' and is, consequently well suited for trading to ports not workable by vessels of larger , draught. She is about three years old, and has just had a thorough overhaul in Sydney at a cost of about £800. The directors of the new company (the West Coast Times undeistands) are Captain M'Arthur, Messrs. J. 'D. Lynch, Ekerman, Suisted (Westpoit), H. Field (Wilkins and Field) (Nelson), and H. L. Michel (Hokitika). The Union Company was advised this afternoon that the Wamui is outside the Greymouth bar, but the sea is too heavy for her to cross the bar. Her departure has been postponed until 9 o'clock to-morrow morning. It is stated that Captain Stuart, forme: I\' of the Shaw-Savill liner Matatua, has resigned, and • that Captain Moffatt, of Hie i.s. Maori, is to take command of the new steamer Mamari, Mr. Chudteigh, chief officer, of the Maori, taking over the command of that vessel. No official advice of the change has been received. The New Zealand Shipping Company announce the 17th December as the sailing date from Wellington for London of the Paparoa, which is at present loading in the North. The date of departure of the Ruapehu from Wellington for London has been altered from 19th January to 17th January.
