LOCAL AND GENERAL. « "I wish they would apply some shop hours rules to Ministers," remarked the Premier to a deputation yesterday. "Probably we should live longer." "'Pass an Act to that effect yourself," pertinently remarked a member of the deputation, unmoved by the pathos in the Premier's voice. "Yes," replied Mr. Seddon, "and I should probably be the first one to be brought before the Court by the Inspector for breaking the law." Since the beginning of the present year New Zealand has exported 491,189 ounceii of gold of the value of £1,875,484, or 7669 ounces of the value of £30,914 more than during the first eleven months of last year. A coal lease has been granted to Mr. G. Tacou over an area of 1577 acres in the Ngckawau district, for sixty six years. One condition is that the sum of £10,000 must be expended during Ihe first three years. The health of Mr. J. It. Gamble, Manager of the Petone Borough Gasworks, though improved, is not likely to permit him to resume active control of the works till the New Year. The Mayor has been authorised to arrange with an officer of the Wellington Gasworks to assist the Borough Engineer in supervising the Petone works in the meantime. The tea and bread and butter which conclues the weekly sittings of the Wellington Benevolent Trustees was mentioned by Mr. A. W. Hogg at yesterday's election of Trustees. This ' refreshment, he explained, was partaken of that the Trustees might know for themselves the quality of the food supplied to applicants for relief. The idea, he thought, was one which should be adopted in other charitable institutions and in hospitals. The directors of the Wellington Athletic Park Company have declared a dividend of 5 per cent. The new brick building which Mr. E. O. Peers has erected next to Mr. G. Denton's establishment in Willis-street, has been sold to a Wellington lady for £10,000. Mr. Peers has also disposed of j his section in Hunter-street, next to the Central Hotel, upon which premises are in course of erection, the purchaser being Sir Kenneth Douglas. It is understood that the price paid was about £12,000. Ghas. Scott, a labourer, was charged before Dr. A. M'Arthur, S.M., yesterday with having failed to provide maintenance for his wife. Mr. Wilford prosecuted, and Mr. Herdman defended.. Evidence showed that the parties had not been married long, and that very unhappy relations existed between them. For the defence it was stated that prosecutrix was not a destitute person, and that she had an opportunity of returning to her home, which she alleged she had been forced to leave. His Worship said he would take time to consider the case, and give his decision on the 9th inst. Wm. Klein pleaded guilty to having failed to comply with an order of the Court for the maintenance of his illegitimate child. Defendant was sentenced to one month's imprisonment, warrant to be suspended so long as he pays 12s 6d a week, first payment to be made on the 12th December. Mesdames S. A. Rhodes (President), J. P. Luke, W. J. Osborn, T. W. Hislop, W. H. Sefton Moorhouse, W. B. Tripe, and H. J. Preston were present at yesterday's meeting of the' St. John Ambulance Nursing Guild Committee. In her report for November, which was submitted to the meeting, Mrs. A. Holgate (the St. John Ambulance District N,urse) stated that thirteen patients were being attended to. Writing to their Wellington agentsMessrs. W. M. Bannatyne and Co. Limited under date 19th October, Messrs. John Dewar and Sons, Limited, of London and Perth, say:— "You will, no doubt, be as pleased to hear as *we are to tell you that we have just been notified of our success in obtaining the Grand Prix, which is the highest possible award over all competitors, for Scotch whisky at the St. Loufe Exposition, 1904. This ia just one more addition to the already long list of awards wo have receiver!, which goes to prove the superiority of our whisky over all others." — Ad.vfc.
