FIRE ON A SCHOONER

Ine Northern Company's auxiliary schooner Greyhound, Captain M'Kinnon, en route from Auckland to Hokianga, caught fire oft Kawau Island on, Saturday evening. She was towed back to port with the.after part of the vessel in flames and the engine-room and cabin gutted. The fire originated near the benzine tank in the engine-room. The crew's effort to extinguish the fire with a hand pump and buckets was of no avail. The Glenelg, which was bound to Auckland, passed the Greyhound a quarter of an hoiir before the accident, and went alongside the burning vessel and towed her to Auckland. On the way the Glenelg's_ crew kept a stream of water from their steam pump playing on the flames, and also took on. board their vessel 70 cases of benzine which were stowed near the fire. The vessel reached the Hobson Wharf at 11.15 p.m., where the city fire brigade was wa-iting. It took two hours before the flames were subdued. The hull is charred on the inside aft and the cargo damaged by water.
