THE MAIN BODY
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I -trust you will grant 1 me the favour of a final reply to your correspondent "Another Side." lam sorry that she ignores the fact that my letter was solely ■written to take exception to tlie harsh terms used by previous correspondents when referring to our soldiers' English wives. Even "Another Side" mentions "imported wives," as though these young women were so much merchandise. May I just, in conclusion, quote from the chronicles of the N.Z.E.F., a paper published by New Zealandefs in London, dated 21st June, 1918? The paragraph reads : "We hope that when our Ministers return home they will tell of the splendid and wonderful work which is being done for the boya, both by the British, and the New' Zealand people here, particularly the woman. Through j their unceasing toil and se/f-saerifice, j I they have mado ths life of. the N.Z.E.F. j I on its adventures a thousand times imps j delightful than it might have been." j Also, on page. 229 of the same issue, au- | pears the following : ."Why be lonely? On the register of the War Contingent Association there are the aames of many British people, in all parts of London and the British Isles, who would like to enlei'tiiin our fellows during their leave. This applies to all ranks of New Zealanders. These hospitable offers include all manner of entertainments, stays of unlimited duration, weeks, week-ends, evenings, and afternoon teas and dinners. The only matter which remains to' be settled is the making of arrangements between prospective guests aiid their hosts,, and any follow wanting a week on a farm, a visit to Wales, or anything of the sort, should write to Miss Helen Mackenzie, 11, Southamp-ton-row, W.C.1." • And these, Sir, are the people, should any of them be brought out hero as soldiers' wives, that your correspondent Would have New Zealand people regard as strangers. Ye gods! what's the use of saying more?—l am, etc., RETUENED SOLDIEB.
