TRAMWAY DISPUTE
MINIMUM WAGE AGREED TO
The conference between representatives of the City Council and the tramway men, under the presidency of the Con-j ciliation Commissioner (Mr. W- • New-! ton), concluded on Saturday night. The?.' agreement provides for a'-flat rate miiii-t' mum wage of Is 4d per hour for all' tramway employees: This is what the, men have claimed, and is an increase ofi2fd per hour over the present rate,' meaning a minimum wage .of £3 4s a;' week. If adopted, the new rate wiffi operate from 4th. October, 1918, until. 3rd October, 1919. The terms of the agreement have at-.' ready been considered. by one shift ofi the menj and it is possible'that befdre I any final decision is arrived at a hieeting of the combined shifts will be called.. In the meantime the trams are being l'Unf, to schedule time. The Mayor has called a special meeting of the City Council to consider theft matter at noon to-morrow. ' _At the conclusion of the proceedings of the conference, Mr. J. Hutchison moved and Mr. W. H. Morton seconded! a vote of thanks to the Commissioner for the able and impartial manner in: which be had presided over the confer--ence, and the great assistance he had:, given towards arriving at the final sefc-l tlement.- . In reply, Mr. Newton congratulated.) the representatives on coming to a settlement, and thereby overcoming the un^' I satisfactory state of affairs that had ex-] ! isted for sometime past. The Wellington-. City Corporation and its employees invariably come to a settlement over any dispute as towages and .conditions. The corporation had a very good record in its relations with its employees. .He 1 hoped the new agreement would be loy- | ally adhered to during the next twelve ' months.
