HARRIERS

BALLANTYNE MEMORIAL

WON BY L. SINCLAIR

A bleak southerly wind last Saturday made conditions unpleasant for harrier runs, but the mud, as. a result of the week's heavy rain, tended to make the sport more interesting. The most exciting race of the day was the Ballantyne Memorial Cup event, competed for by Scottish members at Lyall. Bay over the five mile Vosseler Shield course. Mrs. Bollons dispatched the field of seventeen starters, a /limit of 4min ,44sec being given away,by the scratch man, A. L. Steven ß . L..Sinclair (lmin osec) was the winner, and in the last stage of the journey slipped away from Stevens to win by a good 120 yards in 30mm 25sec. Stevens ;gecured fastest cime in 30min 17sec. the next in order were B. Lower, A. Black, B. Crisp R. Silverter, and L. Dawkins. A pleasant gathering took place at the conclusion of the event,' speeches being made by Mr. W. Ballantync, donor of the cup, Mr. W. J. Walter, president, Mr. G. Zander, club captain, and Mr. W Ballantyne, sen. .. Thirty membors of the Olympic Club followed a trail through Happy Valley, and thence back to Island Bay last Saturday. The runners formed into sis teams, and in an exciting gallop home T. M'Lorinan's terim proved the victors, the whole party being well bunch ed together. The teim comprised the following, each man's total following in agures:—Bright 3, Palmer 9, Atley 10, M'Lorinan 11, and M'Naught 14; total' 47. P. Wilson ; 's team was. second, with 69 points, and Bell's team third with 76 points. The first man home was P. Wilson, followed by Carter and Bright. • ■■••.. : Mrs. Shepherd, Wallace street, a keen supporter of the Wellington Club, entertained members of that club for a training run. Thirty-one members donned their togs and set but for a three-mile run T the trail being laid" by T.. MuJcahy and E. Greon. J.-Blair again proved too good for th 6 opposition in the run-in, and led.V Klee and J. Shopherd home by a yard. During the course of the afternoon tea interval Mr. Donaldson thanked the hostess for her generosity. . .' Hutt Valley members combined with the ladies in a special invitation ran from the club captain's residence at Lower Hutt on Saturday. An excellent trail was covered and served as excellent preparation for the 10 mile Vossclor Shield race this afternoon a' Lyall Bay. About a mile from home a deep stroani was encountered, where the girls, not feeling like a swim, cut off on a round-about route, while the male packs waded in and scrambled to the other 6ide. Afternoon tea, supplied by Mr. and Mrs. V. Smith, was brought to a close after a feir remarks by Mr. A. Hadley, on behalf of members. A run-in should be held at frequent intervals by this club, otherwise all interest in tha points positions, will be slowly lost. Brooklyn members assembled at the residence of Mr. Barclay, Wadestown, on Saturday, some thirty runners putting in an appearance. About 150 yards from home a run-in was held, and resulted in a win for Naulds, with Ashton second, and Bibley third. There appears to' be some misunderstanding \ with! regard to. the proposed date of the New Zealand championships; to be held at Dunedin. The Ofcago Centre arranged 24th August as the date, ow ; ing to an extensive programme for September, but a letter has now been received from the Now Zealand Council asking that the date bo reconsidered, as a resolution was passed at the last annual meeting that the race should not be held bofore the last Saturday in August, and:in this case the following Saturday should find favour! A reply, however, has been forwarded to the council asking it to give . the Otago Centre special permission; to run the championship race on 24th August, on account of special- circumstances involved. Whether the council has entertained the proposal is not yet known. Otago enthusiasts are rather indignant over the matter, as the .difference of a week is hardly sufficient to call for much serious argument. ...;•■-... Auckland hopes this year to make a bold bid for :championship honours at Dunedin, as well as. for the individual premiership mow . held, -by Savidan. Likely members include Kells, Whitton, Cooper. Crum, Barker,!' Scown, : Wendgall, and Andrews, but. the .financial difficulty of sending a team is.the chief obstacle to be faced. However; by the 'time action is needed it is ; hoped that the publicjinterest in athletics, will be stimulated'^ sufficiently to prevent any worry in this direction. .:. ■..-. It is interesting to rioted that at a recent steeplechase meeting J.-M'Don-ald, of Wellington, who was third to Savidan in the last New Zealand mile championships, made his reiippearance. In order to send a team toDunedin, the Wellington Harrier Sub-committee has set up a board of trustees to raise the necessary funds. ' A-.sum of £75----will be needed, and as.the Wellington Centre is : only granting One-third of this amount something should.be done immediately An art union ha* been started and it is hoped 'Hint all- e!uh« will endeavour to help the cause by buy-} ■ ing tickets Another objective is toil r::!thrr -mfficK'tit Hnnnr-p >n eoiitro' *"(:t>ji sport without ' assistance from the M Wellington Athletic. Centre. '■'■■■ \ : By the-kind assistance of the Winter! Show Committee, a special cup and mndals have been donated for a three- - mile inrereluh race from the Show on t Saturday, 20th July. The proposed routo 1 will lead along ■ Taranaki -street to Wakefield street and round to Kent " terrace and back through John street. Each club must field a team of, ten runners. According to reports from the South, ( J. B. Barnes looks a certain winner t of both the Christchurch Club and Canterbury championships, as he appears to be well above any other individual southern harrier.
