Sea on Saturday morning moved eastward with surprising rapidity, intensified greatly, and crossed the South Island during Sunday night. Barometers fell to below 20.0 inches around the centre. South-easterly winds blew about Foveaux Strait, and this morning had freshened to gale force. Elsewhere squally northerly winds arose rapidly, and in many places reached gale force. At 9 a.m. on Monday the southerly change had reached Christchurcli, and winds were backing to the south-west in the far north also. The weather became dull and unsettled during Sunday, and rain commenced in western districts. During Sunday night it became unusually general. Manj places had heavy falls, and few escaped completely.
