AUSTRALIANS COMPETE
GOOD PERFORMANCE BY
GRIFFITHS
In spite of the favourable weather, the attendance of the public at the Te Aro Baths was disappointing on Saturday, when the Australian swimmers, N. Ryan and O. Griffiths, made their first appearance in Wellington.
The visitors were down on the programme to compete, in four races—loo yards (scratch) race, 440 yards handicap, 220 yards handicap, and the dual relay, in the latter event Griffiths being partnered with. Miss K. Millar.
The outstanding event of the afternoon was the performance of .Griffiths in the 220 yards race, which he won in 2min 2S l-ssec, which is 4-sscc better than the time made by G. Bridson, of Auckland, when he established the New Zealand record of 2mm 29sec, at Auckland, in February last. The performance indicates that Griffiths is striking- form, and before the tour is finished he should be responsible for some noteworthy performances: In the 440 yards handicap, Ryan also demonstrated that he was vastly superior to the local talent, and he won his race comparatively easily. Griffiths did not show to advantage in the sprint event, whicli was won by Cameron, of Lyall Bay, the New Zealand champion. With Miss Millar, Griffiths secured second place in the dual relay race, a handicap event of 100 yards.
