WOMEN'S ACTIVITIES IN NEW ZEALAND

(To the Editor.)

i^VT s gla<l to see m y°ur issue of ' loth December, an article describing Wo- ' men s Institute work here and at Home ' As voluntary organiser for Wellington Province I should like to add to what was printed, the fact that now there are eighty-four women's institutes in New. Zealand. This includes both North and South Isiand. The year before last there were twenty-two institutes here, and the large increase in numbers shows the lively interest shown in this valuable work for country women. It is not only for fanners wives but embraces all country women irrespective of class or creed. ! ■In_ my trins as voluntary organiser , lorming new institutes in different places . I cannot emphasise too much the lively intelligence of the country women, and i their instant grasp on all that is done at their monthly meetings. These meetings comprise something to hear, a lecture on some subject; something to see, a demon-! stratum on some handicraft; and some-, tning to do—the social side, music, com-; miinity singing, folk dancing, or play; reading or competitions. This gives opportunity for every member to take somo'! part in the proceedings, and results shownow talents are developed fuat wouldnever otherwise have an outlet. When our chief organiser's car broke down from overwork, the institutes clul-I-bed together and bought a new one so that the work should be carried on, audi places reached where trains do not serve I It you know a good thing, pass it on"> is literally carried out by this.—l am, et/ MABEL S. CHRISTMAS, V.0., Women's Institutes, Wellington Prov. Federation. \
