EOME, 22nd December,
In a forced landing in tho Tripoli marshes, Captain Chiehester was unhurt. His machine was somewhat damaged. Fog prevented his seeing adjacent beacons.
Chichester has named his 'plane "Moses," and his motor "Elijah."
The airman is not Captain E. C. Chichester, a3 was stated in the cables on Saturday, but Mr. Francis Charles Chiehester, partner in the Wellington firm of Goodwin and Chichester, Ltd. He is a son of the rector of Shirwell, Devon, England, and arrived in the Dominion tea years ago. His flying experience commenced at Homo only three months ago, but since then he has made several long solo nights, notably one of 4000 miles over the Continent. His home is at Lower Hutt.
Mr. Chichester's wife died suddenly on Saturday at Lower Hutt, and efforts are to be made to advise him of his bereavement. It is anticipated, however, that considerable difficulty will bo experienced in getting into touch with him in view of the doubt which exists as to the route he is taking. Mr. Chichester is flying from London to Australia in an endeavour to beat Hmkler's record. He left Croydon at 3 a.m. on Friday, and flew on via Lyons and Catania (Sicily). He was reported by cable to have left Catania at 12 55 for Horns (Syria). Tripoli is on the coast about 40 miles from Horns.
