STORMS ON THE SUN

UNUSUAL EPIDEMIC

EXTREMELY DISTURBED

. Since the beginning of November conditions on tho sun have been extremely disturbed, stated Mr. G. B. Hudson, of Karori, to a "Post" reporter to-day. During most of this period there has been an almost continuous series of sunspots. Two large groups of highly active spots have recently entered the disc, and will pass tho central meridian towards the end of this week. Tho photosphere around these spots is much disturbed, and there are many "faculae." Numerous smaller spots extend from this group across the sun to its western limb. During last week a number of large sunspots passed out of sight around the western limb, so that apparently great activity exists upon the spot zones round the entire sun. This state of affairs is distinctly abnormal, as we should be approaching the time when the spots diminish, in accordance with tho well-established eleven-year cycle. In August and September there was, certainly, a substantial decrease in solar activity, as might have been expected in the ordinary course. But that has been followed "by the present abnormal increase.
