Mr. V.'. Xasli, M.P., s:ated to-v'ny Hint CO men had been discharged from the railway workshops at Lower Hutt, iiud said that he was making representations on the mater immediately.
Tho following Press Association message was received from Auckland this afternoon:—
Over ono hundred casual employees at Otahuhu Railway Worshops were dismissed to-day, as there was not sufficient work to keep them employed. Mr. Jordan, M.P., has telegraphed to the Hon. W. B. Taverner, Minister of Railways, pointing out that many of the men are married and will suffer hardship in view of the large amount of unemployment.
The General Manager of Baihvays (Sir. H. H. Sterling), when approached this afternoon in regard to the above messages, stated that it was a matter of Government, and not Departmental policy. The Minister of Railways (the Hon. W. B. Taverner) is in Dunediu.
