Christmas Cheer for the Poor. j The Salvation Army's Samaritan Officers in Wellington, Adjutant Thackwell and Ensign Smith, have been busily engaged during the last few days dispatching parcels of Christmas bounty to the poor and distressed of the city From the office of the work in Cuba street, Christmas dinners and teas have been supplied to sixty-six families. In most of the cases there are sad stories to be told of unemployment, sickness,, and force of circumstances. Under such conditions a Christmas dinner of the character supplied would be an impossibility for the families to obtain themselves, but by reason of this Samaritan work the festive season has not been allowed to pass for them without fit and proper celebration. Y.W.O.A, Christmas Functions. Last Saturday night in the "SVW.C.A hall, Boulcott street, the Overseas Committee of the . association entertained eighty girls from the Old Country. The supper table was set at one end of the hall, life with candles in brass sticks and well supplied with caps and crackors, clusters of multi-coloured balloons falling from the ceiling and a full-sized Christmas tree, gaily decorated and illumined, added to the general air of festivity. Competitions, dancing, and musical items made the time pass merrily. The girls danced a reel to the tune played by Pipe-Major Macdonald, and the Southern Cross club girls sang carols under the direction of Mr. F S Pope. Mrs. E. Pearson (president) cut tne Ghnstmas cake, and Miss Eita Lawrence, on behalf of the girls, returned thanks to the committee for the party Miss Marjorie Wood, for the club girls welcomed new arrivals and invited them to join in the club activities next year. Miss Helen Ovens asked the girls to show their appreciation of Miss M Leod, Girls' Superintendent of the Immigration Department, who was present, and this was done in hearty fashion. Among the association officials present were Mrs. Pearson (president), Mrs. F. S. Pope, Mrs. Page, Miss Speedy, Mrs. Fraser (Board of.Directors), Miss Beeves (Overseas Committee), and Miss Ward (Membership Committee).
