OUTRAGE IN A THEATRE.

An amazing case of thuggery took place on May 24 at a New York theatre. The scheme was for one of three bandits to enter the theatre during the play and to sav to a man named Williams, who is well known to carry a considtruble sum of money, "I've a coupon for two seals you, have, and I want them." "You liavs nothing; of the kind," aiowered Mr Williams. "You are a bar," cried the man, and seized Mr Williams by tlie shoulder.

A man who icpresented himself as an usher stepped forward, and said to Mr Williams: "No trouble here. Get out into the lobby and settle the question." When Mr Williams arose from his seat and started for the lobby his wife followed. In the lobby Mr Williams met the man who claimed his seats, the individual who represented himself as an usher, and a third man. A second later Mr Williams was felled to the ground by a jemmy, but be yelled so loudly that policemen arrived from the outside, whereupon the throe conspirators re-entered the auditorium, and were lost in the audience.

Reserves of police were summoned, and ibe house was surrounded. The play summarily ended owing to the excitement and the threatened panic. All inside the house had to pass before Mr and Mrs Williams, who failed, however, to recognise their assailant. Afterwards a man who wa3 fcigniug sleep in a theatre box was identified, and before the morning two others were arrested on suspicion. All three were remanded for further inquiry.
