KUMARA BOROUGH COUNCIL
(Our Own Correspondent.) The usual meeting of the above was held last evening. Present— His Worship the Mayor, Crs. Benyon, McGlone, Campbell, Hggleton, Rouse, Jorgcnsen, Burger.
From ihe Westland Agricultural ami Pastoral Association, asking that the business people of Kumara be asked to (lose at noon on Wednesday, February 15th.—Request granted. From the Westland Railway League, relative to agitation for speedy coiuolotion of Midland Railway, and extension of railway to Ross, also asking for a vote of £7 10s towards the promotion "f the agitation.
His Worship favoured all assistance being given towards promoting the agitation. He however could not hold out any financial support, from the Council at present.
Cr Kggletnii favoured referijjg the matter of fiuanical assistance to the Finance Committee. He thought it would lie wise to advertise the (.'oast as. suggested I." the League. Resolved thai the League be informed that the Council will give every assistance in its power, I.ut could not g'\e financial aid at present. Cr. Benyon called the attention of the Council to the dilapidated state of the cemetery. The place was overgrown, and someone would be dropping a match and setting fire to the grass and destroying the fence. Cr Eggleton also culled the attention of the Council to the fact that some ol the drains were overgrown and blocked. These should be cleared. Cr. Jorgcnsen said the fence was in a very dilapidated condition, and required repairing. Cr. Rouse explained thai some time ago the whole of the Reserves' Commit tee had visited the cemetery and decided on certain improvements. Specifications were to be drawn up. However, bo was not very anxious, as he did not see where the funds were to come from. Pegs were got to re-mark the graves some time ago. The day-labour man and the Town Clerk
were to have the pegs numbered, but the former was too busy, and up to the present he was unable to go. Cr. Jorgensen said that Ihe day-labour man would ho free to go up on Monday. C'r. Benyon proposed that the Chair man of Reserves Coi ittee lie instruct ed to have all the grass and rushes in the cemetery cut down and cleared away.— Seconded by Cr. Eggloton. Or. Rouse moved an amendment that all 'he members of the Reserves Committee visit the cemetery on Monday, and decide on what is necessary.—Seconded by Cr. Campbell. The amendment was put ami carried Cr. Kggloton brought up the perennh) stray-cow nuisance. It was time some action, was alien in the matter. He did not know who was the Inspector of Nuisances. Ho did not. do his duty, and should. Cr. Jorgensen said it, was impossible for the Inspector to be about all night watching for stray cows. Cr. Eggloton gave notice to move at next meeting that the appointment of Inspector of Nuisances be rescinded. Cr. Eggloton complained that property in the southern end of Main street was totally unprotected from fire. He thought something should be done in the matter.
