A FALLING OFF.
[By Telegraph—Press Association,]. 1 , Dunedin, last night. During'the week ending to-day, returns have been reported from 42 dredges, the total yield bcing.973 ozs. 10 dwts.,„ or an average of 23 ozs. per dredge. , Notwithstanding the increased number of dredges at work, the total yield for the eight weeks of the present year, is scarcely up to that for tie corresponding period last year. This is the result of high rivers. Additional returns are :—-Sterling £33 ss, New Alexandra £2l, Upper Waipori £2O 15s, Evan’s Flat £l6 13s, Paul’s Beach £l4, Second Magnetic £lO 16s, Nelson Creek West Coast 46 ozs. for 132 hours.
A horse attached to a trap bolted at Wellington yesterday afternoon aud dashed into a chemist’s shop. Tho occupants of the trap were thrown out, and Maud, McDonald, aged 12, had her skull fractured. , At Sydnoy a middle-aged man named Walter Waugh was remanded on a charge of having stolen jewellery in his possession. He was arrested on coming ashore from the Elmgamite, and had £‘2oo worth of jewellery in his possession. The following is tho copy of a circular sent to all members of the East Coast Mounted Rifles “It is proposed that the company proceed to Palmerston North, or wherever the Government may decide, for the purpose of attending the annual Easter Camp. You are requested to notify Captain Winter in writing at once whether you will he able to attend or not. The time required .will be from 3rd to about 13th April, also whether you will be able to proceed overland with horses, if required, leaving hero' Sunday,'3lst March, and returning about 16th Apr.L ’-
