NEW ZEALAND.
By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, last night. The Wellington City Council are again offering threepence a head, for rats, and a house-to-house inspection of premises has commenced. It has been decided to form a Nelson company of the Seventh Contingent, besides those named for Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury, and Otago. The following sentences were passed by Hr Justice Cooper Hugo North, false pretences, two years; Ngatuna Natu, theft, one month; Thomas Cassidy, defeating the cause of justice, one year. A petition was presented to the Premier this morning from South Island mercantile men, praying the Government to assist in the development of trade with South Africa. The Premier expressed sympathy, and said several tenders had been received from firms willing to lay on steamers. He was now in communication with the Shaw-Savill, and New Zealand and Tyser lines, asking them to quote rates of freight, and further action would depend on their answers.
