WELLINGTON NEWS.
SALARIES COMMISSION. [By Telegraph—Press Association.] v . Wellington, last night. Mr Morton, Inspector of Schools at Hokitika, has been appointed Secretary to the School Teachers’ Salaries Commission. FEDERAL CONTINGENT. The Commonwealth Contingent will leave Lyttelton for Sydney, on route for Melbourne by the steamer Warrimoo, on the 26th inst. UNION DEMANDS. The hearing of demands made by the Napier Painters’ and Decorators' Union against employers will be taken in Wellington. THE DUKE. It is probable that a joint address from the Hebrew congregation of the colony will be presented to the Duko of Cornwall on his arrival at Auckland. MAYORALTY. Messrs John W. Aitken and Thomas M. Wilford were to-day nominated for the City Mayoralty. Twenty-four candidates wore nominated for twelve seats in the City Council. The City municipal roll contains 13,660 names, as against 19,072 on the Parliamentary roll.
OTHER MAYORALTIES. Messrs James Reid, George Frost, Geo. Baylis, and Arthur Fulford have been nominated for the mayoralty of Melrose, and '.here are eighteen nominations for the Borough Council. Messrs James Henderson and F. McDonald contest the mayoralty of Karori, while there are fourteen candidates for nine seats on the Council. HAIRDRESSERS. Recently the Hairdressers’ Assistants’ Union made demands upon employers for shorter hours of labor, increased rates of pay, and a definite system as regards employment of apprentices. The demands were considered at a meeting of the master hairdressers of the city and suburbs, who decided that it was impracticable to accede to the demands. It is expected the Conciliation Board will be asked to adjudicate in the matter.
UNFORTUNATE SOLDIERS. The Premier has received the following cable from the Governor of the Cape, dated 15th April :—John Moore, of the Sixth New Zealand Contingent, has died of dysentery at Pretoria on the Ist April. W. G. Williams, of the Second Contingent, is dangerously ill with enteric fever at Springfontein. Trooper W. Stack, of the Fourth Contingent, is dangerously ill at Johannesburg.
