NEW ZEALAND.
By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, last night. The Patea Harbor Board adopted the report of Mr Reynolds, C.E., recommending the west pier to cost for 600 ft £15,000, or for 700 ft £21,700, which would effectively protect the bar, and give considerable deeper water in the channel. It was resolved to get the necessary Bill prepared authorising a loan to carry out the work. The weather is a remarkable contrast to last year, when May and Juno were the most persistently wet months experienced for many years. So far, the winter has not really begun; the air is mild, and often close. Very little rain has fallen, and the days are bright and sunny, with an unusual absence of wind.
The Postal Department is advised that the Ventura, with colonial mails to the 25th May, arrived at San Francisco on the 11th instant at 7 a.m., some hours late.
Hawera, last night. Frank Molloy, livery-stable keeper, was found dead in his bed this morning.
