By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, last night. The Hon. Hall-Jones left yesterday for Wellington. Count Belet, a Frenchman, was assaulted by four men, who were seen kicking him by a party from a dance, but they did not interfere. Six stitches had to be put in under his right eye. His nose was broken. The motive is supposed to be robbery. The cable steamer Britannia arrived yesterday, and reports that the cable route from Norfolk Island to New Zealand is good, It has been decided to land the cable at Doubtless Bay. The Britannia proceeds on Wednesday to Norfolk Island to survey to Fiji via Fanning Island, thence to Honolulu, The Anglia, which lays the cable, is expectod early next year. Wellington, last night. The case of lvex v. Kirk was argued in the Court of Appeal this morning. It was a Crown case reserved from Christchurch for the Court of Appeal by Judge Cooper. Tho Court unanimously decided that the conviction must be sustained.
