The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. GISBORNE, SEPTEMBER 25, 1901. AN EXTENDED BOROUGH.

The meeting of the Amalgamation Committee last night was a very hopeful one in support of the proposed extension of borough boundaries, and on the petitions presented it is clear that a large majority is in favor of amalgamation. The figures for Haiti show that 63 out of 105 have signed, which, allowing for absentees, makes a very large majority, while the value is £30,020 out of a total of £lB,-125, so that in each way the petition” has been very largely supported. The Whataupoko petition does not show up so well, but still there is a majority, and unless the minority are prepared to make an active stand against amalgamation the majority should prevail. It is not likely that the Borough will throw any obstacle in the way of amalgamation, though it may not guarantee to carry out all that is expected of it. Unless the opposition to amalgamation now takes more definite shape the proposals should soon be given a,practical form.
