The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. GISBORNE, OCTOBER 16, 1901.

Wo understand that informations for obtainin'' and supplying liquor to a prohibited person have been laid, and will be heard some time this week. The County Cricket Club hold a practice match at Ormond on Saturday next. A meeting will be held on the ground to elect officers, etc. A report reached us last evening that lliinsy notes were in circulation in town. As next week will be a carnival week, it would be just as well fur tradespeople to be on their guard. Tradespeople are anxiously enquiring as to what day is to observed as the holiday next week. People's day at the Show will he Wednesday, and perhaps that would be the most convenient day for the holiday.

The outgoing correspondence read at the Council meeting last evening included a notice to raise the chimney of \V. O. Sheet's factory to 00ft, the prescribed height, within one month from the date of the notice. In the Sanitary Inspector's report at tin' Council meeting last night it was

staved that no eases of fever or infectious diseases had been reported during the lasi fortnight. “ The best report we have had for a day," rentalked Cr Jones. At the meeting d the Council last evening the question c ievels was brought up. The Mayor said dint the Council had many maps, but none gave the information required. The Cierk said that it would cost idoo to lake the levels of the

town, it was decided that the Mayor and Clerk should have proper speeiheatioos for the work drawn and submitted to the next meeting of the Council. The Native Land Court opened on Monday before Mr Crooking, sub-Com-missioner, Judge Latham not having returned from Wellington. Mr Brooking dealt with succession claims, and on the first day made over forty orders. Being a native scholar he was able to save much time in dealing with tiie natives. It seems a pity that Mr Brooking lias not been given a more extended jurisdiction. A meeting of the Borough Council Finance Committee was held last evening at the conclusion of the Council's ordinary business, to consider the question of the' proposed loan. The resuit of the Committee's enquiries was that it was deemed advisable to raise the money for the Borough loan in London, but it was agreed that nothing'should be done until the ratepayers had decided one way or the other with regard to the proposals.

Tiie Star of Gisborne Lodge No. 61, I.LUJ.r., held a meeting' last evening in the Lodge-room, Masonic Hall, to confer degrees, the X.G., Bro. J. H. Colebourne, presiding, assisted by Bro. A. G. Wheeler, F.G., ami the offices of the Lodge. Several bretlnen were advanced to higher degrees ill a very impressive* manner. The Lodge expect a visit from a Grand Lodge officer shortly, probably Past Grand Master Bro. John Bnrchcli. of Auckland, when it is hoped every member will endeavor to be present and derive ai! the advantages that will he given if such a visit from so able and exalted a Brother as Bro. Burchell, wdio is a veteran Oddfellow.

• The classical concert to be give a tomorrow evening in the Academy of .Music under the supervision of Messrs Sidebottom and Massey promises to be a creat success. The concert will follow on the lines of the chamber recitals which have been held during the past few years in the principal cities of New Zealand, and have proved extremely attractive to lovers of music, with the result that a taste has been established and cultivated for the composition of the best composers, of whose works many had hitherto been ignorant. The management announce that

i tickets, the price for which are 2s each to the popular parts of the house, may be ! obtained at the doors. The front seats of the gallery have been reserved. At the Council meeting last evening His Worship mentioned that while Mr King. Harbor Engineer, was in the Sonth, he had inspected the septic tank in operation at Caverskani, and had come back strongly impressed with the capability of the system, and its suitability to this district.' His Worship mentioned that a newspaper report had been sent to him of the opening of the Masterton works, where the same system appeared to give satisfaction. He suggested that members ; might like to hear Mr Kino's views on tinsubject. Councillors thought the idea an ; excellent one. C'r L; star remarking that ' it was the only sys _-m suitable to Gis- j borne. It was "decided to ask Mr King to : meet the Council at his convenience.
