The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. GISBORNE, OCTOBER 25, 1901. THE MONOWAI.

j A cheat souse of relief was experienced on receipt of the nows that the maguilieeut steamer Monowai was being towed to port, and had not suffered any more serious mishap than probably broken-down machinery. Those in a position to form a fairly good judgment on the position were quite sutifstied that the Union Company’s line steamer would in due course be found to bo quite safe, but tho prolonged delay was naturally causing grave uneasiness among those j who had friends aboard tho vessel. ! The susponso was becoming acute, and j a great load has been lilted oil' the minds of those specially concerned, while tho community generally will receive the information with a feeling of intense satisfaction. Tho fear that worse might have happened will make tho question of inconvenience, and of repairs to the vessel, a matter of minor importance. It is probable that those j oil shore lmd a more anxious time | than the people on the vessel. SHOW WEEK. j Tim present week can fairly bo termed 1 Gisborne’s gala season of tjig year, when people from all parts of tho wide aud fertile district pay a visit to town aud enjoy the round of pleasuremaking. .Fortunately the show' was favored by good weather, and whatever may be said of the quality of the show itself, there cau be no gainsaying the fact that the fixture was quite us popular as over as a meeting ground for the people. It must be admitted that tho show was not on tho whole, in keeping with the itnpoitauce of tho district. There were some splendid exhibits, but there was not tlie competition that could have been relied upon if many who do not take the trouble to send exhibits wore to become infused with a spirit of enthusiasm aud heartily give their aid !in connection with the show. Still it is pleasing to be able to stato that each year a steady improvement is being made, aud the time may not be far distant when the Gisborne show will rank among tho chief exhibitions of the colony. That it is popular was shown by tho enormous attendance, especially on Wednesday. The President, Secretary, stewards, aud other ollieers are deserving of warm congratulations for tiie excellent arrangements iu connection with tho show, everything passing oil iu a most creditable way, aud a compliment may also well be paid to the judges. Naturally every mau is apt to look with special favor oil his own particular exhibit, and the judges themselves are always liable to err, but uli things considered, tho judging this year gave general satisfaction. Many people who came into town to attend the show have stayed to enjoy themselves at the Turf Club’s annual meeting, and yesterday—the opening day—tliero was a very large gathering of people who love to witness a horse race, i hough it was not a regular holiday, tho business premises might just as well have been closed, the amount of trade being so small. Iu the oveuiugs the old favorites, the Pollard Opera provide hearty enjoyment for those who like good operas well played. The members of the Pollard company are great favorites throughout tho colonies, aud it is only in the ordinary course of things that they should nightly draw crowded houses in Gisborne. tio far Show wue.. has been iu every respect satis-' factory. There has been good weather, albeit rather dusty, aud everything has so far gone olf without hitch of any kind.
