ATTEMPTED MURDER.
MAN COMMITS SUICIDE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Wellington, last night. George Hobbs, driver ot the coach between Shannon and Foxton. shot himself dead this morning. Previously he had shot his daughter, wounding her in several places. Palmerston North, last night. News reached Palmerston this morning that an elderly man named George Hobbs, living at Shannon, shot himself through the heart with a revolver after tiring three shots at his adopted daughter, Ethel Cameron. The latter, aged about twenty, was hit on each wrist and in the abdomen. She was brought to Palmerston hospital, but it is feared tho wounds will he fatal. Hobbs was proprietor of coaches running between Foxton and Shannon, and the girl, it is supposed, was engaged to his driver. No reason is known for Hobbs’ action. FURTHF.U PARTICULARS, DELIBERATE SHOOTING. THE FATAL BULLET. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, last night. Further particulars of the Shannon tragedy show that tho young woman who was the victim was the adopted daughter of Hobbs, her name being Ethel Cameron. For some time past she had been staying with a stepson of deceased, a baker named Coyle, at Shannon. Deceased was in Palmerston yesterday, it is stated, and purchased a revolver there. He returned by the evening's train to Shannon, having tea on the dining ear. when he appeared to be in his usual spirits. It is stated that the quarrel took place between the man and girl whoa they met lust evening, but the shooting did not take place till after seven this morning, wlu-n the man went to his stepson's house, produced the revolver, and began bring at Miss Cameron, the shots taking effect in her arms, right hand, and side. Deceased then, without hesitation, turned the weapon to himself, and tired, the bullet going through his heart ami killing him instantly. Ethel Cameron was brought to Palmerston by this morning’s train, and taken to the Hospital. She is in a critical state.
