The Dunedin Scandal.

Dunedin, last night.

Tho tote cases were heard to-day, before a Bench comprising Messrs Carew, Stipendiary Magistrate, Spencer, Smith, and Christopher, Justices. At the outset Mr Sim, for defendant Grant, took strong exception to the detectives under warrant seizing defendant’s books. Mr Carew said the books were in Court, and could bo tendered in evidence. If anything wrong was done tho person could be hold °to account. Brent, on being put into tho witness-box, declined to give evidence lest he should incriminato himself. Tho Crown then tendered an indemnity. but as witness still refused, his examination was not persevered with. Later— The hearing ol the charges of tote betting against Peter Grant was continued to-dav before Mr Carew, S.M., and two Justices. Much time was taken up by legal wrangling. The Bench decided that the witnesses called could not be compelled to give evidence. The first charge was dismissed, on the ground that the evidence in the books and papers did not disclose tote betting, but in the second case Grant was fined and costs. In the third case decision was reserved until after decision of the appeal given notice of by each side in the decided cases.
