THE SESSION CONCLUDED. Par Prqss Association. New Plymouth, last night. Tho Institute concluded its sittings today. A remit from South Canterbury that the Minister be requested to extend to schools taking a suitable course in extra subjects fcr standard 7 the privileges at present granted to district high schools, was amended as follows: That the In-spector-General’s scheme of scholarships be endorsed by the Council. The amendment was carried. The Westland remit that high schools be not open to children who have not passed standard 6 or the equivalent thereto invoked a good deal of discussion. A suggestion was made to lower it to standard 5, but the motion was lost. A resolution was carried that in the opiniqn of the Council a revision of the syllabus is necessary, and that in framing such revised syllabus the several classes of schools be provided for, and reductions made in the syllabus in order that more time may be available for manual instruction. An Auckland remit urgiDg the desirableness of introducing the Metric system of coinage was carried. It was resolved that in the opinion of the Council the retention of the annual pass examination aud issue of pass certificates for standards tend to prevent freedom of classification, which is the aim of the new regulations. At the afternoon session the Taranaki remit urging the desirableness of a uniform set of text books for use in the schools of colony was carried. The Southland remit that the Institute approve of the principle of Government attention to the physical welfare of children attending schools was carried. It was resolved that the superannuation fund scheme promoted by the Otago Institute be submitted to the Executive with power to act. It was resolved that the next Council meeting be held at Napier, the date being left to the Executive to arrange. After other routine business and votes of thanks tho Council adjourned.
