FEDERAL POLITICS.
MR BARTON BEFORE HIS CONSTITUENTS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Sydney, Jan. 9. Mr Barton addressed a largo gathering of his constituents at Maitland. He reviewed tho work of tho session. The record of legislation passed was a good one, considering the difficulties the now Government was under. There was now a constitution and an active, organised opposition. He claimed that tho arrangement with the Shipping Companies over the stores trouble was an honorable compromise, and no backdown by the Government. He urged the value of New Guinea to the Commonwealth, arid tho necessity of opposing any weakening of British influence in Now Hebrides. He reviewed the tariff and its effects at considerable length. He had a cordial reception.
