Licensed Drivers.
(To tho Editor of the Times.) Sik, —It has always been considered necessary care should be taken that officers of a vessel are efficient, and why not then have equal supervision of those who in a measure hold our lives in their hands on land ? In Gisborne the qualification of a cab driver is that he pays half-a-crown, but in Southern cities the fee is not so much considered as the efficiency of the applicant. There it is necessary to obtain a guarantee from responsible people more particularly those who are not engaged in trade, and who become absolutely responsible to the extent of £SO each. For laches, etc., these guarantors bind themselves, and their bonds are recoverable. Tho point really at issue is, are our present drivers really competent, or does the Council take ordinary precaution in issuing permits ? I am, etc., A Licensed Driver.
