(Per Press Assodaiuri.) DUNEDIN, last night. An inquest was held to-day on the body of John George Hewitt, a hoy seven years of age. The evidence given tended to show Unit deceased must have got- a revolver from his brother’s coat pocket. The coat was hanging on a nail six feet from the ground. The jury returned a verdict oi accidental death, no blame being attached to anyone. METHODIST CONKEIIENOE.

The sittings of the Methodist Conference formally closed to-day. when the Journal was read and signed by the President. Most of the northern delega tes left by the express train. MEMORIAL service. A memorial service in connection with the death of the Rev. John Nelson was held in the afternoon, the Revs. \V. J. Murray (President), and Dr. Motley being present. SCHOOL CADETS. A deputation waited on the Premier to ascertain the position of school cadets. The Premier explained that I 'all cadets are now under the control of the Education Department. He did not think capitation would lie paid, hut; where liabilities had been incurred in good faith no doubt they would be met. The regulations would not he made a hard and fast rule as to only one kind of uniform. A certain number of rifles would he issued,, as no doubt shooting was one of the attractions. CONTINGENT CHAPLAIN.

At First Church to-night, there was a service to set apart tho Rev. Dutton as chaplain of the South Island battalion of tho Ninth Contingent, and commending him and the men of the Contingent to the sacred keeping of God. There was a largo congregation, including the Premier, the Mayor, Rev. Dr Morley, Rev. Ronaldson (Anglican), and ministers of other denominations. DRAINAGE ENGINEER.

Twenty applications were received by the Drainago Board for tho position of Drainage Engineer. The applications aro from all parts of Australia. They were referred to an expert committee altogether outside the Board.
