ROWING.

GISBORNE V. HAWKE’S BAY. (Special to Times.; Napier, last night. The annual rowing fixture between the Napier and Union Rowing Clubs and Poverty Bay and Gisborne Clubs took place in the inner harbor to-day. There was a large attendance, there being a number of Gisborne enthusiasts, and the conditions for rowing were favorable. The principal contest was between the tenstone crews of the Poverty Bay and Union Clubs, and produced a good race. The visitors went to the front early and maintained the lead throughout, winning comfortably by a length and a half. After the start of a race between Gisborne, Napier and Union, in which the former broke their outrigger, the Gisborne junior crew rowed the Union Club's junior crew, which race resulted in a most exciting struggle. There was a ding-dong race all the way, but the staying powers of the Gisborne men were a bit too good for the local men, and the visitors ultimately won a good race by half a length. The boat used by the Gisborne representatives was one taken down by the Poverty Bay men. To-morrow the Gisborne juniors race the Napier juniors, and the Poverty Baycrew are to meet the Union Club’s junior crew.

Per Press Association. last night. A series of rowing races was held to-day in the inner harbor between the crews from the Poverty Bay, Gisborne, UnioD, and Napier Rowing Clubs. The first contest for the junior crews was between the Gisborne, Union, and Napier Clubs. Gisborne broke their outrigger, and gave up, Union winning from Napier by about two feet. Gisborne were afterwards permitted to row fhe Union crew, and beat thefii three-quarters of a length, after an exciting race. For the senior race only the Union and Napier crews competed, the former winning by a length.
