CONSTABLE ASSAULTED.

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) Auckland, last night. He is in the hospital in a critical condition. He had arrested John Duffy on a charge of disorderly conduct, and conveyed him to the station in a hansom. On arrival there Irwin ran into the statation, crying “ I’m done for,” and fell on the floor bleeding. Duffey was secured and placed in a padded cell. Irwin states that Duffey became violent in the cab, and beat him severely. He kicked him in the left side and in the abdomen, and forced his head through the window. Irwin’s friends reside at Hawera.

Later. —At Poliee Court to-day Jno. Duffy was charged with assaulting Constable Irwin so as to cause him actual bodily harm, with assaulting Constable Hodge, and with damaging a hansom cab. Thomas McKeown was charged with inciting Duffy to resist Constable Irwin. Both were remanded for eight days, McKeown being allowed bail in two sureties of J£so each. The charges are the outcome of a Saturday night street row, when Constable Irwin was so seriously injured that he became unconscious, and had to be removed to the hospital. He is now progressing favorably.
