CRICKET.

WAIPIEO, TUPAEOA, ETC., V. TOKO MARU AND MATA.

(Special to Times.) This match was played as arranged on Saturday, 29th March. The day was all. that could be wished. Owing to the recent rains the ground was heavy, which assisted the fielding considerably in keeping down runs. The game was most interesting, and resulted in a very close finish, Tokomaru side winning by one run. The Tokomaru-Mata players from the first made up their minds that they had taken on a big job, and when their opponents arrived on tho field this was still further impressed upon them when they saw such well-known cricketers in the team as Messrs Ludbrook, Beale, and Kelley, whose batting in tho second innings especially was tho best Tokomaru have ever played against, Mr .Ludbrook in particular giving tho bowlers a lot of trouble. Tho fielding of the Tokomaru team was exceptionally good. Something of a record was made by W. Oates, jun., who is only in his 15th year, in tho Waipiro first innings, he being credited with seven wickets from six maiden overs, no runs being got off his bowling during the innings. W. Albert kept up his reputation as a bowler, his average for the match being 4'7. Messrs Beale and Ludbrook took most of the wickets for their side ; Mr Beale bowling with a big break, and Mr Ludbrook his usual tricky balls. Mr Beale’s average for the match being 5, and Mr Ludbrook’s 3'4. About 11 o’clock the game commenced, the Tokomaru team having won the toss, decided to bat. Mr L. E. Cotterill captained the local team, and Mr Ludbrook tho Waipiro team. The following are the scores :

As the scores imply, the finish was somewhat exciting. Great credit is due to Mr Cotterill for the way in which he handled his men .in the field. Quite a nice luncheon and tea were provided by Mr J. Hales, in his very best style. This gentleman is making quite a name jfor himself in catering for gatherings of this kind: he knows what is wanted, and can do it himself, satisfactory to all,
