The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. GISBORNE, APRIL 3, 1902. MILITARY SCANDAL.

Australia is gaining an unenviable notoriety with its military scandals: While the public are being served up every morning with a new version of the affair in South Africa, the troops just leaving New South Wales have been bringing disgrace on the Commonwealth; It appears that men who were to leave Sydney yesterday in thetroopship, having received their pay, promptly seized the opportunity to desert, while others were found to be iii a drunken state on board the vessel and some arrived in a state ol drunkenness while .the farewelling party; .were on board the troopship. .The discharge of the commanding officer from his position may, be some solace to wounded feelings,- but it will require much sterner measures than that to deal with the men who thus bring disgrace on their colony. Just now Australia cannot afford to have such incidents occurring, especially'as so much ado has been made anent the punishment meted out to men accused of shooting Boers not in action. It is to- be hoped that the deserters will tie promptly punished,-
