GALE AT TAURANGA.
WAVES BREAKING ON TO THE STRAND. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Auckland, last-night. A gale of most unusual violence was raging at Tauranga this morning, with deluges of rain. At highwater a tremendous sea was running in the harbor. The waves broke right on to the Strand roadway, doing much damage to the breastwork, several timbers of which were washed away. Several boats dragged their moorings or broke away, and were swamped on the beach. The force of the gale broke the windows of some shops on the Strand, and a good number of trees were uprooted or broken.
