A PUBLIC BENEFACTOR,
'(Per R.M.S. Ventura at Auckland). (By Telegraph). SAN FRANCISCO, March 20. A despatch from Liverpool dated March 17 th says that the steamer Oceanic, sailing from this port, will have on board Mr Alfred Mosely and Marquis Townshend. Mr Mosely is coming to the United States to arrange for a visit to this country in the autumn of a commission representing the workmen’s organisations jiffive-sixths of the British industries. The delegates, who are to be elected, will accompany Mr Mosely at his expense. They will be accompanied by newspaper and literary men. Mr .Mosely will also defray the expenses
of the visit to the United States at the same time of a commission of experts whose object is to enquire into ,the educational systems of the United States. Mr Alfred Mosely was in the South African diamond fields when the first discoveries were made there, and by unflagging industry and ability, he lias amassed an enormous fortune. He has also won fame for philanthrophy.
AFFAIRS IN IRELAND. A cable from London dated Marcli 18 says that the Vatican has received confidential news, says the Rome correspondent of the Daily Chronicle, of a serious situation in Ireland. Fenians have for some months teen engaged in active propaganda with a view to organising for a general rising. It is believed the Vatican will instruct the Irish clergy to hold aloof from the revolutionary agitation.
WIRELESS TELEGRAPHY, A despatch from Ottawa on March 17 says that ail agreement between .William Marconi and the Dominion of Criada for the establishment of a .wireless telegraph station at Cape Breton has been brought to a -.atislactory issue. The contract will ba signed in a few days. Mr Marconi leaves here for Cape Breton co-mor-xow for the purpose of selecting a site for his power station. It is expected that wireless communication will be established between the Dominion and Great Britain by the beginning of !June. A BOER COMPLAINT.
A telegram from New Orleans, Louisiana, states that General Pearson, accompanied by a Boer representative, waited upon the Governor, and asked the Governor to order an official investigation as to operations of British officers at Port Chalmette, just below New Orleans. It is che,rgtd that the British have estabVisned a military post in American territory, have men and soldiers assembled there engaged in warlike operations, buying military supplies and recruiting and enlisting men for service against the Boers in South Africa.
