While going through the Preneh Pass on Sunday the Dingudee took ground, and stuck fast for twelve hours. The vessel was on • her way from Greymouth to Lyttelton, and proceeded on her voyage. She will be docked at the latter place. VICTORIAN COMMISSION.
The members of the Victorian Factories Commission arrived in Wellington to-day, and paid a visit to the sitting of the Arbitration Court. GAMBLING WITH THE LAW. Sitting in Banco this morning, the Chief Justice was asked to quash the decision of the S.M. who recently fined a number of Chinese for playing fan-tan and pakupoo. It was contended by the counsel for the appellants that they could not be convicted of assisting to conduct a common gaming-house, unless some person had been convicted of keeping or managing such place. In this case, there had been no keeper convicted.' It was not an offence to play pakapoo or any other Chinese game, except in a house kept for the purpose. In fact, in this case there was no evidence that the game had been played at all —only the production of certain articles used in games of chance, which were found on the premises. The case stands partly heard. THE TRADE AWARDS.
In interpreting trade awards to-dayi the Arbitration Court decided that, in the building trade, men called upon to assist to erect scaffolding be paid Is 2d an hour, and men working at a concrete-mixing board, Is Id an hour. In the tailorcsses’ award, the Court directed that alterations not provided for in the log be paid for on the basis of Is per hour.
