BENEFIT CONCERT.

It must have been particularly pleasing to the members o£ the Gosmoplitau Club to see the ready response made by the public m regard to tne benefit concert given m the' 'iheatre Koyal last evening. The cause was a thoroughly deserving one, and the pacKed house demonstrated the sympathy of CtisDorne residents, a nrst-class programme had been prepared by JVir Jas. Chrisp, and each item was well received. An appropriate pianoforte overture was piayed Dy Misses Larsen, who made their lirst appearance betore a local audience, 'llie selection was played in a most tasteful manner, and tne young ladies were warmly applauded. Mr i<\ feat gave an excellent rendering of “Gondola Dreams,” whilst Miss Bright sang with marked success “ The Last Milestone,” receiving the hearty plaudits of the audience. Mr Hill’s comic song, “Music Master,” was encored, as also was Mr A. Don’s euphonium solo, “ Air .Vane.” “ Honey, say that you'll be Mine ’’ was pleasingi> rendered by Miss Grey.' Mr Barlow sang, “ Remember me no more ’ with good effect, and Miss Redstone gave a charming rendering of “ The Flight of Ages,” narrowly escaping an encore. Tne second part of the programme opened with the overture, “ Coi,}icolo,” by Misses Larsen. Mr Mitchell gave a successful interpretation ol “ Asleep in the Deep,” an encoie being demanded but not responded to. Mr Webb recited “ Marmion ” in good style and Miss Heany was heartilyapplauded for “Dolly’s Revenge.’ Mr Jas. Chrisp is always sure ol a good reception for a cornet solo, and his selection last evening entitled, “ The Thorn,” was much appreciated. Mr J East was in excellent voice, and gave a most successful rendering of that favorite song “ Good Company-.” Mr Lyttelton made .a great hit with his song “ The Languid Min ” aiid the audience .compelled him to make a second appearance. Mr Melville contributed a patriotic song in a maimer that won for him an undeniable encore,'anil lie responded with Gentlemen, be seated-’’ The accompaniments during the ’.veiling were played by Mrs J. C.irjsp, Misses Grey and Clair, and several gentlemen. Prior to the commencement of the concert-,: which was started punctually at eight o’clock, the Rifle Band played a number of selections outside the hall, the music attracting a large gathering. A word of praise is due to the members of the Cosmopolitan Club for the manner in which the concert was worked up, and special mention should he made of the services of the secretary, Mr Cogar, and Mr W. Webb. It is expected that over £4O will be raised by the concert.
