The coffin was covered with the Union Jack. v The pilot engine was preceded by an armoured train, which was escorted with an extraordinary display of popular love and respect all the way. Hundreds travelled long distances to witness the ceremony. All the postß and blockhouses were, furnished with guards of honor, which presented arms. All husiness was suspended. Buildings everywhere were draped. Kipling’s elegy, eulogising Mr Rhodes’ greatness of soul, was lead at the grave.
