LAND SETTLEMENT. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, last night. During the last month, the Lands and Survey Department put upon the market for selection eight properties which have been acquired by the Government for closer settlement. EXPORT DUTY ON TIMBER,
An Order-in-Council has been passed, imposing an export duty of two shillings per hundred superficial feet on kauri timber, in flitches not exceeding thirty inches in width and nine inches in thickness. INNOCENT CHINESE.
The Chief Justice to-day allowed the appeal of a number of Chinese against their conviction for illegal gaming by Mr Ilaseiden, S.M. His Honor found that the evidence had not established that gaming had actually taken place on the premises, or that the place had been kept as a common gaming-house. ARBITRATION AWARDS.
A deputation from the Trades and Labor Council waited on the Premier today, drawing his attention to the delays that have taken place in giving awards by the Arbitration Court. The Premier said the delay had occurred through the length of time the Court was without a Judge while Mr Justice Cooper sat attending Supreme Court cases. The latter, however, has assured him that the Court would shortly be abreast of the work, and that after the normal condition was returned to there would be no delay in giving awards.
DREDGING. The Kohi Kohi dredge obtained 15o z for 124 hours’ work.
