SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The ordinary meeting of the Gisborne
School Committee was held last evening. Present: Messrs J. W. Bright (Chairman), 1). M. Orr, F. C. Cramond, A. T. Hookey,
J. Brown, G. Humphreys, T. Sweet, and File.
Mr F. Cramond was appointed to act as Hon. Treasurer to sign cheques, and Mr Brown was selected to act in a similar
capacity.
Mr W. Paltridgo wrote offering a section .or a school site at Whataupoko.—On the motion of Mr Humphreys the letter wa3 referred to the Board of Education. On the application of Mr H. Hamblett, caretaker, it was decided to formulate a claim to be made on the Ocean Accident Insurance Company in regard to an accident that the applicant had sustained whilst taking down forms in the school. Mr A. T. Hookey applied for exemption for his son Elliott, who was attending a private school. —Granted. The Secretary of the Education Board
wrote re teachers’ residence, stating thal it had been decided to ask the Department for permission to sell the present residence, it being in a dilapidated state and unsuitable to live in.
On the recommendations of the Visiting Committee, it was decided to purchase a number of articles for the school. The Committee decided to 1 take action in the case of a number of children who had been irregular in attendance, being absent more than two half-days in each week.
It was decided to increase the remuneration of the Secretary from £ls to £•2O.
The Treasurer reported that there was a credit balance of £42 14s 7d.
The Chairman was appointed supervisor for the forthcoming drawing examina tions.
Messsrs Cramond, Brown, and the Chairman were appointed a Visiting Committee for the month.
Some discussion took place with regard to the payment of quarterly money. Mr Hookey thought the Committee wore losing money by the transactions, as the amount collected did not come up to the expenditure. The Secretary said that there had been a small profit.—lt was decided to ask the headmaster to furnish a list of those who were in arrears.
The Headmaster reported that the school continued to grow both in roll number and in attendance. During the four weeks ending April 25th, the roll number had increased from 859 to 879. On April 23rd, there was a record attendance —798. An estimate of the size of the secondary department during the coming year was supplied by Mr Rowley, in order that the Board of Governors might have time to make provision for the increased attendance.
