MR BRIDGES AND HIS PURSE OF SOVEREIGNS.
(To the Editor of the Times)
Sir,—Allow me to contradict a statement which appeared in your, paper of Monday, to the effect that a presentation of a purse of sovereigns was made to Mr Bridges on his departure (for England or elsewhere), “ on behalf of those interested in hotels in Gisborne.” Permit me to inform you that the five individuals —Messrs Harding, Hogan, Barry, Martin,'and Oman, who constituted the gathering, did not possess any right or' authority from' the trade to pretend to spend any money on their behalf in such a foolish and fabulous manner, nor did the trade pledge its fidelity in Mr .Bridges. If these five individuals wished to extend their hospitality to Mr Bridges they could easily do so, but not ‘at the expense of others—l am, etc., ' J 3. P. JOYCE.
