May 4.—Seven ex-Australian Governors hays made an appeal through the Times for £l2,(Kill to assist the New Guinea Bishopric. Mr R. S. Siever refused Mr Vanderbilt’s offer of £35,600 for the racehorse Sceptre.
The Prince of Wales, speaking at an Academy banquet, recalled his visit to ,the Sydney and Adelaide galleries. His. trip to Australia had enabled him to realise tiie steady growth of artistic knowledge and the love of the beautifui in young, vigorous communities. He suggested that the Academy should oiler special inducements to Australian students, who hitherto had been attracted to Paris, to complete their studies in London. He eulogised Luke Tilde's portrait of the King, copies of which were being prepared for Government Houses throughout the Empire.
