ASSAULT AND ROBBERY.

PROMINENT MEN CHARGED.

'(Per Press Association). TIMAKU, last night. The Supreme Court was occupied .the afternoon, hearing charges of assault and robbery against James Heron and Edward Carr. The latter is a member of the Temuka Borough .Council. The prosecutor, who is an old man, was violently assaulted and robbed of a watcli and other articles, near midnight on March 2G, in a street in Te. muka. The principal evidence against Heron was, first, that, while being robbed, the prosecutor recognised him, and said, “ I know you, Jim Heron,” on which lie was violently struck in .the mouth and his front teeth knocked out; and second, the watch was found next morning in the grounds in front of Heron’s house. And the principal evidence against Carr was that lie was with Heron all night, and took him home at one o’clock in the morning. The defence on behalf of Heron was evidence hy several witnesses that he was too drunk to commit such an offence, and that Carr was looking after him. Carr swears that lie did so and that they never were in the particular street where the robbery was committed. Another point in favor of Carr’s story was that the prosecutor did not think 'the second man was Carr, whom he also knew well. Several witnesses were called as to character.

The hearing of the case was concluded as far as counsel’s address, and the 'Judge’s summing up was deferred until the morning. Considerable interest is taken in the case locally, owing to the respectable character of the accused.
