AN ACCIDENT.
WAIKABB SMASHES INTO AUCKLAND WHARF.
When the Union Company’s steamer Waikare was berthing at the outer western tee of the Queen-street wharf on Monday afternoon (says the Star) her 3tern struck the wharf with great force, considerably damaged the piles and planking, smashed the casing of a large boiler, and damaged some drums of oil and cases of acid. The bed of the big crane at the end of the wharf was broken at one of the corners. The employees working in the goods sheds and bystanders on the wharf describe the shock resulting from the collision as being similar to a severe earthquake. The shed on the eastern tee rocked perceptibly. A seven inch steel wire hawser securing the steamer Niwaru to the wharf caught under the Waikarc’s stern, and hindered further progress. This probably prevented further damage being doDe. The Waikare, beiond denting two or three of her porta, received no injury. |
