THE GALE.
A TREMENDOUS BLOW,
CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE IN TOWN AND COUNTRY.
Yesterday morning a strong northwest wind was blowing, aud during the afternoon it shifted into the southwest, and blew a furious gale, doing considerable damage in town and at many of the country districts. The gale was also accompanied with heavy rain. The wind maintained a strong velocity, and increased in forco as darkness was setting in. At -1 p.m. it seemed quite possible to tender the steamer, but an hour lator all hope of doing so was abandoned. Heavy weather must also have prevailed in the South, for the telegraph line between Napier and Gisborne broke in half-past ten in the morning. The Coronation decorations wore played great havoc with, aud many’ residents who left their Hags and bunting flying over the Sunday will hud them missing this morning. In many instances valuable Hags were toru to shreds, whilst iu several cases the Hagpoles were carried away. 0
