A TREMENDOUS BLOW,

CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE IN TOWN AND COUNTRY.

The gale was also accompanied with heavy rain. The wind maintained a strong velocity, and increased in forco as darkness was setting in. At -1 p.m. it seemed quite possible to tender the steamer, but an hour lator all hope of doing so was abandoned.
