Cricket Association.

Tho annual meeting of tho Poverty Bay Cricket Association was held in the Masonic Hofcol last evening, Mr Julius Ciesar presiding. Tho report for the year, which was read and adopted, was as follows: — ‘■Notwithstanding the difficulties which beset tho inauguration of any new system, tho mombors of the Association are to be congratulated on tho fact that the district scheme tried in connection with cricket for tho first time in Poverty Bay last year proved, on the whole, a success. The four districts in tho Thursday and Saturday comp etitiens putoams in tho field with almost unfailing regularity for three rounds, tho length of the '■ompetitions agreed upon at tho beginning of the season. A largo number of new players wero brought out, and keen interest was taken in tho result of the competition. It is to bo regretted that tho Association wero

unable to continue the matches until the end of March, owing to tho lack of funds to purckaso material. Dospite tho hoavy oxpenses incurred by the Association in laying an asphalt pitch, employing a ground man, and otherwise improving tho Domain, tho subscription received did not tally with tho number of active members. It has boeD suggested that each club should manage its own finances this year, which, it is hoped, will lessen tho number of defaulters.

“Association Competitions : The Saturday competition was won by the County team, with the creditable record of seven wins and two losses out of nine matches. United were runners-up, with five games in their favor and four to debit. In the Thursday matches Whataupoko held pride of place, with six victories, two games going against them. City filled second place with five wins and two defeats. “Outside Matches : Three matches were played on tho Domain against outside olevens, viz., Pollards’ Opera Company, Janet Waldorf Company, and H.M.S. Penguin, the Gisborne team winning on each occasion. An oloven from town journeyed to Tolago Bay towards the close of tho season, and suffered defeat. Ecpeatod attempts were made to induce tho visit of a Napier team, but without success. An endeavor should be made in tho coming season to got Hawke’s Bay to return the visit of Poverty Bay in past

years.” ' The balanco sheet shows tho receipts during tho year to have been £BS 18s, composed of subscriptions £27 10s, ground fees £8 Bs. The was £33 10s Bd, leaving a balance of £2 7s 4d. Of tho balance £2 Is 6d are special subscriptions for tho erection of a pavilion, leaving a suplus on general account

of us 6d. Tho election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mr J. W. Nolan; vice-presidents, Messrs Lysnar, ITarding, and Macfarlano, Cicsar; secretary, pro tern., Mr J. V. McDonald ; treasurer, Mr D. C. Hawkins. But little could bo dono in tho way of arranging matches, owing to the fact that only two clubs had held their annual meetings and elected dolcgates, and after considerable discussion had taken place, it was decided, on the motion of blv J. Cajsar, that tho meeting should adjourn until next Friday evening, at the same hour and place. It is to be hoped that by that time the United and City Clubs will havo held thir annual meetings and appointed delegates.
