Further particulars ; n regard lo the death of the well-known writer Zola ate to the effect that he returned from Ihe country on Sunday. The house . being cold, a lire was lighted in the * fire-place. / The chimney proved smoky, and the servants lowered a metal sheet, leaving a block of fuel to smoulder, bur I they opened the windows, which, however, were closed again at night. The indications are that the blocks •.•-•burned slowly, arid exhaled gas, which, /' accumulating in the defective chimney, penetrated the bedroom. *' The servants knocked at the bedroom door, and obtaining no response, ■ tiny entered the room. -in doing so they found M. Zola lying on the floor, lie was quite dead. Madame Zola was iri bed, but was unconscious. When animation had been restored, Madame Zola said that she had had a headache, and tusked her huslnnd to open the window. On rising lo do so he fell. She fainted. The experts say that the fumes are the strongest nearest the floor.
