e P.B, IIOWIXG CLUB’S TRIAL FOURS h o The final in the Poverty Bay Rowing :• Club’s four-oar competition was rowed on n Saturday afternoon, a large number of • spectators being present on the bridges to s watch the contest. The rival crews were ’ R. Donkins (str), Iv. McLeod (2), W. - Parker (2), M. McLeod (bow) and J. W. o Smith (str), A'. Somervell (8), R. Roderick 3 (2), Arch. Pool (bow). The crews were 3 despatched to an even start, but Donkins’ : crew gradually drew away from their opponents till they established a sure lead. , Smith’s crew was pulling well, and manfully endeavored to overtake the leaders, ' spurting time after time, but Donkins' crew maintained their position in the van, ' leading all the way and winning by a length or more. Both crews were heartily j cheered at the conclusion of the race, " j GISBORNE ROWING CLUB. On Saturday evening another competition of the trial fours was rowed between L. Shcrriff (str), P. Kciha (8). B. Bennett (2), L. Clare (bow) and S. Williams (str). G. Nolan (8), B. Tanner (2), 11. Garret: (bow). From a good start both crews got well away, Shcrriff soon afterwards assuming a lead of about three lengths, and had everything apparently his own way for the first half-mile, but Williams, who had been going steadily, was creeping slowly ! on his opponents. Opposite Reid's Williams set to work in grim earnest and : soon got good pace out of his boat. The i race then looked serious for Sherrifi', both j crews keeping on equal terms causing ■ much excitement. However, Williams’s j crew stuck to their work gallantly, and r resulted in their -..inning a hard fought a battle. v This evening the semi finals will be j rowed, when Symes meets Fisher and j Hansen meets Williams.
