TAKES POSSESSION OF ISLAND AND INVITES PRIZE-FIGHTS AND DUELS.
ST. JOSEPH, MO., Nov, 1
A sandbar island in the Missouri river, opposite this city, has been squatted upon by Jack Ring, and all ellorts to dislodge him have been in vain. Ring ha&-b*ftlt a house on the island, aod declares that he will hold it against all invaders., He is armed with a shotgun. The island -is' in neither Missouri nor Kansas, the current of tjie river flowing on each side of it. Several weeks ago, when the annual rise of the river came, and it was seen that the island would not be washed away or covered by the high water, efforts were made to buy it from the County Court of Buchanan County, The county judges had the island surveyed, and then found that they could not give a title to it because it is -not- in Missouri.. The island contains 300 acres.
Application was made tp the County Commissioners of Doniphan County, Kas., to buy the land, but they could not give a title to it, as the land is not in Kansas t All the time this was going on, Ring was in possession of the island. He says he will arrange for prizefights to take place there, and if the days of duelling are not passed, combatants will be allowed to come there (where they will be without the pale o{ the lav/] and S§ht it out.
